Roles shift depending on who's in the room

Most people aren't purely one role — the planner in one friend group can easily be the chaotic one in another, depending on who else is there and what role is already taken. This quiz scores based on how you'd instinctively react in a handful of group scenarios, which tends to surface the role you default to when nobody's explicitly filling it — not a fixed label, just the pattern that shows up most often.

Why every group seems to sort itself this way

Friend group roles tend to emerge the same way any small group naturally divides labor — someone has to remember the reservation, someone has to smooth things over when two people are annoyed at each other, and once a group settles into who does what, it's genuinely easier for everyone to keep doing their assigned-by-nobody role than to renegotiate it. That's also why the same person can hold completely different roles across different friend groups: the roles that are already "taken" shape which one is left for you to naturally fall into.

Taking it as a group

This works best taken by everyone in a friend group separately and then compared — the fun (and the arguments) usually come from someone's self-assessed role not matching what everyone else already assumed about them, which is often more revealing than the result itself. A group where everyone agrees on everyone's role probably already knows each other well; a group with a lot of disagreement is a good sign there's more to learn about each other than anyone assumed.
