Rocks drift in from the edges and wrap around the screen instead of just vanishing — shoot a big one and it splits into faster, smaller pieces instead of disappearing outright, so clearing a wave means actually finishing off what you break apart. Getting hit costs a life and gives you a brief breather to recover before anything can hit you again, and each new wave keeps its distance from where your ship respawns.
