A straightforward countdown

This counts full calendar days between today and any future (or past) date you pick — useful for countdowns to trips, deadlines, exam dates, or just watching a number get smaller as an event approaches. Pick a date in the past instead and it flips to telling you how long ago it was, which works just as well for "how many days since" questions as it does for "how many days until."

Why the number can look off by one

Day counts depend on whether the starting day itself gets counted. This tool counts full days between now and midnight of the target date, which is the convention most deadline and countdown contexts use — if a different source shows a count one day higher or lower, it's almost always this same inclusive-vs-exclusive counting choice, not a calculation error on either end.

What people actually count down to

The most common uses aren't the obvious ones like New Year's or a birthday — those don't need a calculator. It's more useful for things without a fixed, memorized number: a trip booked eight months out, a lease or contract end date, a countdown to a due date for a project or application, or a fixed-term goal like "90 days until this deadline" where the exact remaining count matters for planning. Because it accepts any date, past or future, it also works in reverse for "how many days has it been" questions — how long since a quit date, a move, or a last checkup.

A note on daylight saving and time zones

Because this counts full calendar days rather than exact 24-hour periods, it isn't affected by daylight saving time shifts the way an hour-based countdown could be. It does use your device's local calendar, though, so if you're counting down to a date tied to a different time zone — an event starting at a specific local time elsewhere — the day count here is based on your own local midnight, which can occasionally differ by a day from the event's own time zone right at the boundary.
